Trase 20cm buriable TDR soil moisture probes measure soil moisture content by observing the velocity of propagation of a high frequency (3 GHz) electromagnetic pulse through the soil. The propagation velocity of the pulse is determined primarily by the water content of the soil, allowing the later to be calculated by the probe's microprocessor.
